Play Kitchen Revamp

I got this cute little play kitchen on Craigslist for $25!  Of course, for $25 there were a few unsightly flaws to it.  Notice the big gash in the cabinet & the missing handle?

But as soon as I got that puppy home, I knew just what to do: whip out some scrap paper & Modge Podge & get crackin’.  I also made a quick trip to Lowe’s for a cabinet handle ($6.99).  It was a little too long, but a cute little tea towel makes it less noticable.

What do you think of the final result?  I’m pretty pumped about how it turned out!

Obsession: Style Prep

When I fall in love with a product, I go overboard.  I tell everyone I know about it.  I tweet about it.  I shout it from the rooftops.  Essentially, I become a brand ambassador.  And now that I’ve got a blog, it only makes sense to write about it.

So without further ado, here is my latest beauty obsession:  Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep.  Have you tried this perfection??

Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep – obsessed!

Here’s the story…

I have very fine hair.  This hair type is wonderful for up do’s and teasing, but it can look a little scraggly when it’s down and loose.  It makes me a little self-conscious, and that’s why I rarely wear my hair down and loose.

Until my last trip to the beauty salon when my stylist used this product on me.

My appointment was over, and I was chatting to a lady next to me when she commented, “I just can’t pull off that look like you…you have that good, thick hair to work with.”  I had to look over my shoulders to see if she was talking to someone else.  Turns out, she was commenting on my little ol’ fine-haired head.  I left the salon with a bottle of that Style Prep in my hand and have never looked back.

Of course, that salon could strategically place sweet old women to con self-conscience fine-haired mommas like me into purchasing their products.  If that is the case, consider me happily conned.

Get Your Greens Breakfast Smoothie

Get Your Greens Breakfast Smoothie

We normally juice every morning, but today I just didn’t feel like cleaning that sucker.  So I turned to my trusty blender for an easier alternative.  Then I realized I didn’t have many choices to throw into said blender, so I decided to take a gamble with some random things.  And it was a hit with me, My Hubs, and My Girl.  She actually drank two sippy cups full!  Give it a try and get your greens in at breakfast!

Get Your Greens Breakfast Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 lemon (no peel)

Throw ingredients into blender and blend until smooth.  Enjoy!

Staying at Home = So Long Ambition?

Hopping on the elliptical one day, I forgot my headphones. So I reached for an outdated copy of The New Yorker to keep my mind occupied for the next 45 minutes. And my blood began to boil.

Inside was an article in which a (childless) author wonders how a bored & intellectually unchallenged stay-at-home mom can tell her daughter education is important when she herself has abandoned her education to be at home.

My face is red just from typing that statement.

See, I’m that mom she’s talking about. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and while working full-time, I earned a Master’s of Business Administration degree at night. I spent seven years supporting my husband through school while I paid the bills. I earned a spot as a “Top 20 Professional Under 40.” I had a baby and decided to be at home with her.

So in that author’s mind, I’ve thrown my hands up in the air and said goodbye to my previous life as an ambitious woman. I’m showing my daughter that working life is over once you have a child.

Come on.

If I took a three year sabbatical from my job to work in an orphanage in India, I would be called inspiring, fearless, impressive. But because I’m taking ta few years away from my career to raise my child, some say I am without ambition, goals or inspiration.

I couldn’t disagree more.

My accomplishments are not erased with my decision to focus on My Girl. My education doesn’t evaporate because I don’t receive a paycheck for a period of time. And my core qualities – ambitious, focused, driven – don’t disappear; they’re transferred to the role I’m playing now and the role I will play in the future as I transition back into the working world.

I don’t personally know a single stay-at-home-mom who wasn’t in the work force prior to having children. And I don’t know a single one who isn’t planning to return once her children are in school full time. And I certainly don’t know one who wouldn’t declare she wants to encourage her daughter to be anything and everything she desires.

Deciding to be at home for a few years isn’t a damnation to a life of servitude to my spouse. It isn’t a declaration that I’m forever done with the career world. It isn’t destitution.

It is a choice that is right for my family right now. And a choice my daughter will have if/when she becomes a mother. And I’ll support her wholeheartedly either way.

Made My Day

Today I was giving My Girl a snack at the Y before I headed to Yoga/Pilates Fusion (killer!).  And a sweet, older man sitting across from us said: “I don’t know how you do it.  Raising her is an awesome responsibility.”

So sweet, so true.  Made my day!

Kitchen Quick Fix

Kitchen Quick Fix

I have a subscription to Real Simple magazine.

The previous renter has a subscription to Real Simple magazine, and I’ve never been so grateful to read someone else’s mail!  I find little tidbits every month, and this particular tidbit has made my cooking time less hectic.

Pull out five of your most used utensils from your utensil drawer.  Place them in a jar next to your stove.  Voila!  No more sorting through a crazy cluttered drawer while you’ve got things cooking.

It’s so simple but has made such a difference for me.  Yay quick fix!  And yay stranger mail!!

Purchase a Pinterest Party at Target!

I was browsing the aisles on a baby-less Target trip (glorious!) when I came across this cuteness. Target has taken Pinterest ideas and packaged them up for purchase! These snippets of cuteness are for a pink and grey bridal shower – complete with cupcake toppers and decorated straws. Love it! So the next time you’re wanting to go all out for your engaged girlfriend but don’t have the time (or the skills) to throw an extravaganza, hit your local Target! Baby optional.
