Self Portrait

I am inspired by self portraits, but I cannot nail one for the life of me. And I don’t try them very often because I am not “portrait ready” in my everyday life. So I took a cue from my girl Natalie and tried one with little makeup & messy hair, straight from the gym. Liberation! This portrait is far from amazing, but at least I’ve got a jump off point to work from now.

Location: my kids’ bathroom. Ha!

Crossing State Lines for a Play Date

When your friend moves to Alabama, you make the trek across the state line for a play date. When you’re a photographer, you take photos of said play date. Here they are in all their rough, tumble & tiara’d glory. Such fun little girls!

A Sylvan Park Morning

Last summer, we moved just a few minutes away but into a new neighborhood outside downtown Nashville. It has been a full fledged love affair with Sylvan Park ever since. I’ve been a lifelong car addict, having to jump into the car to get just about anywhere (mostly by necessity). But not here. Not in good ol’ Sylvan Park. Within a 10 minute walk, I can get some hot chicken from Hattie B’s or tacos from The Local Taco, fresh produce from at the farmer’s market or The Produce Place, and donuts from the Vegan Vee. I can take a jog on the Greenway or check out a good book at the library. I can head on over to a friend’s house for a hang out if needed. Sigh. This place is lovely.

This week, we had one of those mornings in our neighborhood that was just so fun & simple. It is a morning I know I’ll think about when I’m shuffling kids to and from school, longing for the days we could pick how we’d spend them. We took a trip to Richland Park, hit up the library then snacked on some donuts. Sylvan Park, sweet treats & sweet moments. Perfection.

An Old Friend & Her New Baby

It was 2001. I just arrived in Florida for my first big girl adventure in the Walt Disney World College Program & looking over my first “apartment” that I would be sharing with five strangers for the summer. One of those strangers and I would head out on the town that night and be the last ones standing. Actually, we’d be the last ones walking home on the highway and being picked up by a cop who escorted us home. But that’s neither here nor there.

This girl & I have celebrated 21st birthdays, graduations, marriages & babies. We actually shared a BED in a one bedroom apartment for a summer in Vegas. We’ve been around the block together. And our newest story involves a trip to her home in New Hampshire, playing with her two year old & meeting her new baby. And I had the pleasure of photographing it all. These photos make my heart sing!

Toddlers in Paradise

My sister & her husband and my husband & I took four toddlers on an international beach vacation. Relaxing? No. Fun? For the most part. It was a wonderful change of scenery and the kid area at the Majestic Colonial Resort in the Dominican Republic was top notch. But the flight home where my one year old screamed 90% of the time? No bueno. At least I scored a free glass of wine from a flight attendant who took pity on me.

There was a whole crew of people in the Dominican Republic for the reunion of my uncle-through-marriage’s family (all of us pictured at the bottom!), so we hopped in and pretended to be a part of the clan. Though I wasn’t able to grab as many photos as I would’ve liked – ensuring said toddlers did not drown was a bigger priority – I did grab some keepers. Enjoy!
